Italian Passport Requirements

Obtaining an Italian passport is often the goal of gaining dual citizenship but it is important to remember that you cannot get an Italian passportItalian passport without first being a citizen of Italy.  Therefore, dual citizenship is an Italian passport requirement and must be done before even applying for a passport.  Once dual citizenship is obtained, you will have the same right to an Italian passport as natural born citizens of Italy. Italian passports are used by Italian citizens to travel and as an identity document.

After you obtain Italian citizenship either by descent or through marriage, your information is passed to the relevant government location in Italy by the Italian Consulate.  Once your citizenship and civil status are registered by the Italian government, the Consulate will let you know and provide instructions on applying for an Italian passport.
